Unreal Engine 5 Revealed! | Next-Gen Real-Time Demo Running on PlayStation 5

Unreal Engine 5 empowers artists to achieve unprecedented levels of detail and interactivity, and brings these capabilities within practical reach of teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries.
Join Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux (filmed in March 2020) for an in-depth look at "Lumen in the Land of Nanite" - a real-time demonstration running live on PlayStation 5 showcasing two new core technologies that will debut in UE5: Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry, which frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see, and Lumen, a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes.
Also present in the demo are next-gen features already available in Unreal Engine 4.25, such as Niagara VFX improvements, Chaos physics and destruction, animation system enhancements, and audio advancements. Unreal Engine 4.25 also includes support for next-gen consoles.

  • Wondering when (if not already) animation studios will be using game engines to produce their movies/tv shows. The changes in graphics have drastically changed over the past 20 years and it's getting harder and harder to tell that it isn't realistic. Sidenote: I can't wait to see this applied towards VR games.

  • I doubt that anyone over at Epic reads the comments second on YT much, but I do have genuine questions about something that didn't go over. This new system is absolutely amazing for gamers. If everything we've scene here isn't stage (or partly pre-rendered), then holy crap this is pretty amazing. However the game dev in me has serious concerns and some skepticism about these new systems. This new system only benefits the way static models are made and imported into the engine. This system however negatively impacts the entire animation art pipeline. For years animation has been done by making a high poly mesh, reducing the poly count and then exporting that lower poly mesh into a animation capable software for it to be rigged, animated and then have the detail maps applied from the High poly mesh. This is done for two reasons. Performance (which would be a mute point with this new system) and so that riggers and animators on the art team can actually do their job. Believe it or not but higher vertices on a mesh actually are a detriment to riggers and animated because there is more they have to add vertex weights to, and that means more time spent testing and improving a mesh so that mesh clipping when in animation is at a minimum or non-existent. Even then it still happens in many games, even AAA ones. Mesh clipping is incredibly hard to fully remove on complex characters (especially humanoid ones). So this new system would ONLY work is Epic Games is working directly with 3D Modeling software companies to help them create new software suits and features to allow the modeling, rigging and animating of character models to be streamlined and compatible with their new engine version. Otherwise the analogy I can think of to best use here is this: Take the Star Fox game from the SuperNES console and make everything but the ship the same poly, and visual detail as what you see in Elite Dangerous. That's what this will end up being is Epic isn't laying the ground work with so many Software companies prior to dropping UE5. Your static models and environment models can look as beautiful and amazing as you want them to, but is the thing the player uses to get around the game world isn't at the same level of detail as the world itself. Then the player will be taken out of the experience and the suspension of disbelief is will torn asunder. So I hope someone over there at Epic reads this and can better elaborate on how they plan to handle this moving forward. I am excited as not only a gamer but also a game dev, but while one side of me is really hyped, the other side of me is very worried that all this hard work that the software engineers over at Epic will have been for naught.
