A personal thank you to Air Force MSgt Ryan Crane for nominating me for this flight. Thank you sir.
The Thunderbirds have a SVproject Channel
This flight took place on May 3, 2019 in Biloxi Mississippi. The reason it took so long to release is the high amount of research I wanted to do before releasing the video. I even visited the Air Force Research Lab at Wright Patterson AFB to discuss some aspects of this video with Aerodynamicists. Synchronizing all this footage and coordinating additional B Roll with the Thunderbirds Public Affairs Officer also required a lot of effort.
These are my own thoughts, not those of the U.S. Air Force or the Thunderbirds:
I've been around a lot of pilots and ground crew in my life and I must say that the professionalism displayed by the Thunderbirds was astounding. Their goal is to inspire and demonstrate the capabilities of the US Air Force, so I'll take it a step further. If you're a smart young person who is interesting in changing your life for the better, strongly consider the Air Force. The job market isn't the best at the moment but the Air Force still has opportunities available for you to learn incredible skills even if you're not interested in flying. They manage everything from logistics, electronics, aerospace, cyber and even space systems. The threats to freedom are becoming more complex, and in my experience working for the Department of Defense over a 15 year span (even longer if you count my work as a contractor) The US Air Force consists of some of the most intelligent service members our country has. These people are book-smart, but also have the confidence to solve real world problems with their own hands. If I have a complex aerodynamic question, my first call is usually to someone in the Air Force, because they understand these complex phenomena intuitively. For example, in this video you would hear Flack and I talking about pitot tubes in flight. We also had other discussions about fuel burn rates, Prandtl Glauert, weather.... all kinds of things. Simply put, if you're looking for direction in your life, and you're good with science and math... consider the Air Force. That being said, they also need other types of skills as well. Logisticians, writers, creative people who know how to solve complex problems in unique ways.

  • This video was the opportunity of a lifetime. When asked if I wanted to fly in an F-16, I said "Yes please, and there are some things I'd like to study. Can we try supersonic flight at different altitudes?" I'm very grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Flack and the rest of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This flight took place on May 3rd, 2019. This Spatial Disorientation training is something all fighter pilots go through so they can understand how their own physiology works under these conditions. Thank you for watching and learning with me. I always wanted to know what happened in the cockpit when a jet goes supersonic. • i long ago went through most of USAF flight training & myself flew the Cessna T-37 jet & never ever forgot that incredible experience. Not near supersonic but for me plenty fast & being fully acrobatic & do recall pulling lesser G's probably a max of 5 - & always since wondered until now about the supersonic experience I never had. Your's is a wonderful video in so many ways - truly teriffic & finally filled me in with distinct & thrilling pleasure to say nothing of new knowledge which is certain to impact my next images as artist in NYC. bill rabinovitch on FB.

Thank you, also for opening the eyes to the wonders of nature and the universe to the eyes of your watchers. We often go through life unaware of the beauty of the physics right under our eyes. I am left in amazement when I watch your videos. Thank you for your hard labor. I am glad there are people who have opened doors to the facilities you give us access to via your content. My kids love your videos and I pray they grow up to be amazed just like you and I.

  • I once had a pilot school as a client and I was given an opportunity to go up in one of their aircraft. I expected a simple flight as a passenger over the south coast of England for 10 minutes or so. Instead, I found myself in control of the aircraft from the second we left the hard standing until the pilot took control due to heavy cross wind on landing. Not much different, I guess, from a pupil's first flying lesson but I can tell you my heart was pounding when we were at the end of the runway and the pilot says: "Take your foot off the brake and when your speed gets to Xmph pull back on the stick..." I really think if it hadn't been for the cross wind he would have had me land it as well. Not quite 7.2G in a fast jet but that was my wildly exciting flight experience.

  • As someone who had an incredible professional association with the U.S.N. Blue Angels for a handful of years, I can confirm these are extraordinary individuals. Mentally, intellectually, physically, and in terms of individual spirit, teamwork and discipline. I got real comfortable knowing these men & women were better human beings than me in nearly every measurable way. Calling people/aviators like these friends while learning from them, and by simply observing them, has been one of the great honors of my life. Spectacular video.

  • I took a back seat ride in an F-105 training run at Ft Sill Oklahoma. It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. I was ok from the 10,000ft to 1,000ft. Still ok at 5,000ft to 500ft. What got me was the strafing run. My vision went to looking through a toilet paper roll. They have to pull hard to keep from catching a ricochet and shooting yourself down. Not sure how many g’s but enough. I can’t begin to imagine an F-16.

  • “If I don't approach each new experience with an appropriate balance between confidence and humility, there's a good chance I'm going to be humbled by force.” That statement is profound, but even getting humbled by force doesn't make you look stupid... it just makes you humble. :) You and the work you do through your videos is outstanding. I have little doubt that over time you will continue to inspire young minds to do great things later in life, and that, outside of your own family, will be your greatest legacy.
